Winter soccer in Ottawa.

Ottawa winters are long. Futsal is how players come back in spring sharper than they left.

The outdoor season in Ottawa runs from roughly May to October. That leaves a long winter, and players who stop completely often spend the first month of spring getting their touch back. Indoor soccer, and futsal in particular, keeps them improving.

What is futsal?

Futsal is five-a-side soccer (including goalkeepers) played on a hard court with a smaller, heavier, low-bounce ball. It is recognised by FIFA and played around the world, and many great players grew up on it.

Why it works

  • More touches: with only five players a side, everyone is always involved
  • Faster decisions: tight spaces mean thinking one pass ahead
  • Better close control: the heavy ball rewards soft touches and sole-of-the-foot skills
  • Confidence: lots of 1v1 situations and plenty of chances to score

Futsal vs indoor turf soccer

Indoor turf soccer is closer to the outdoor game and great for fitness. Futsal is more technical. Both are good options for winter, and many players do some of each.

How much is enough?

For most young players, one futsal session a week plus some free play keeps them sharp without burning out. Older and competitive players may add a technical or strength session. See our Performance Lab.

Our Winter Futsal program runs from November to February for U8 to U17 players. Registration opens in the fall.
