What age should kids start soccer?

Short answer: earlier than you think, as long as it is fun. Here is what each stage should look like.

ParentsU4 – U85 min read

Most children can start soccer at around four, and some programs welcome three-year-olds with a parent. There is no "too late" either: plenty of players start at nine or ten and catch up quickly. What matters is that the first experience is fun, active and pressure-free.

Ages 3–5: play first

At this age soccer is really about movement: running, stopping, balance and coordination, with a ball nearby. Good sessions are short (around 45 minutes), use games with stories and imagination, and give every child their own ball. Expect lots of laughing, wandering off and the occasional goal in the wrong net. That's normal.

Ages 6–8: falling in love with the ball

This is where technique starts to stick. Small-sided games like 3v3 and 4v4 give every child far more touches than a big game would. Coaches should focus on dribbling, turning and shooting, and keep score lightly. Our Elite Minis and Development programs are built around this stage.

Ages 9–12: the skill-building years

Many coaches call this the golden age of learning. Children can now take on more detailed technique, understand simple tactics and play in bigger formats such as 7v7 and 9v9. It's also the age when some players start to want more, through extra sessions, the Performance Lab or a competitive team.

Signs your child is ready

  • They can follow simple instructions in a group
  • They enjoy running games with other kids
  • They can manage about 45 minutes of activity
  • They're curious about the ball, even if they're shy at first

What if they're nervous?

Come early, meet the coach and let them watch for a few minutes. Many children join in by the second session. Bring water, comfortable clothes and running shoes or soccer cleats (see our practice checklist). Most of all, keep the ride home positive: ask what was fun, not how many goals they scored.
