Soccer tryouts: what to expect.

What coaches look for, what to bring and how to help your player walk in confident.

Tryouts can feel like a big deal, especially the first time. The good news is that coaches aren't looking for perfection. They're looking for players who work hard, want the ball and can learn. Here's what usually happens and how to prepare.

What usually happens

Most tryouts run for 60–90 minutes and include a warm-up, a few technical drills (passing, receiving, dribbling), small-sided games and often a full-sided scrimmage. Many clubs hold two or more sessions so players get a second chance to show what they can do.

What coaches look for

  • Attitude: effort, listening and how players react to mistakes
  • First touch: controlling the ball cleanly under pressure
  • Decisions: when to pass, dribble or shoot
  • Movement: getting open, tracking back and talking to teammates

What to bring

Cleats and shin guards, a full water bottle, a light snack, layers for the weather and a positive attitude. Goalkeepers should bring gloves. Arrive 15 minutes early to check in. Our practice checklist has the full list.

How parents can help

Keep the build-up low-key. A good night's sleep, a normal meal and a calm drive do more than a pep talk. Afterwards, ask what your child enjoyed and what they learned, whatever the outcome.

If it doesn't go to plan

Not making a team is part of the game for almost every player at some point. Ask the coach for honest feedback, look at a development program to build skills, and try again next season. Many of the best players we know were cut at least once.

Our tryouts are free for every age group and held at Kittiwake Park in Stittsville. See tryout details.
