Age groups explained.

What “U10” actually means, how birth year sets your group and what format each age plays.

Youth soccer in Ontario is organised by birth year. If you have ever wondered why your child is "U10" when they're nine, this guide explains it.

What "U" means

"U" stands for "under". A U10 player is under 10 for that season year: they turn 9 at some point in the calendar year, or are already 9. In practice your age group is the season year minus your birth year, plus one. For the 2026 season, a child born in 2017 plays U10.

Why birth year, not birthday?

Grouping by calendar year keeps teams together for a whole season and makes the rules the same everywhere. It does mean a January birthday and a December birthday can share a team, so good coaches keep an eye on development, not just size.

Game formats by age

Younger players play on smaller fields with fewer players, so everyone gets plenty of touches. A typical progression looks like this:

Age groupTypical formatFocus
U4 – U63v3 – 4v4Fun, movement, first touches
U7 – U84v4 – 5v5Dribbling, turning, shooting
U9 – U107v7Passing, positions, 1v1
U11 – U129v9Team shape, decision-making
U13+11v11Full game, tactics, fitness

Formats can vary a little by league and season, but the idea is always the same: match the game to the child.

Can my child play up?

Sometimes, if coaches agree it's right for the player's development and wellbeing. Ask at a tryout.
